Fishing Women

The fishing industry needs more women that fish! Women who fish now are exceptional role models for the next generation women of fishing - and we want to celebrate that! Meet today's fishing ladies as part of the Women In Angling blog series.

Leanne Vibert

This weeks Women In Angling feature female angler is Leanne Vibert! Leanne is not only a fishing enthusiast but lover of exploration and adventure. Check out her story below:

"Hey everyone! My name is Leanne and I’m a recreational angler from Litchfield, QC. Even from a young age I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors. When I was about 10 years old, my mom brought me to get my fishing licence. I was lucky enough to have my mom bring me and my brothers down to the local docks where we would learn how to bait our hooks and cast a line. We would catch sunfish, perch and the odd bass. When I met my boyfriend, my love for the outdoors grew even more. Since being with an outdoorsmen I have learned a lot about the sport of fishing and continue to learn with each season that passes.

The main species that I enjoy to target include Lake trout, pike and walleye. Whether it’s the excitement of watching the chase of a rocketing lake trout coming off the bottom or the anticipation of knowing a nice walleye right under your jig there’s just something about the feeling of the tug and a having good fight to reel them in. We all love the sound of that drag peeling off your spool. Being from Quebec, there are so many opportunities to camp on remote islands with no cell service. Some of the best fishing are in those hard to find places. Park the truck, load the boat and spend long weekends taking in the stunning views and catching the biggest fish of the weekend; sorry boys! Some people are surprised when we tell them that we mainly jig for trout. It’s known that most prefer to troll, but to each their own, whatever works for them/you!

If I could give any advice, it would be to have patience. Some days you might get lucky and catch multiple fish and others you might get skunked. There is so much to learn, heck I’m still learning. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Keep calm and fish on!"

We would like to thank Leanne for sharing her story with us all. You can connect with her on instagram @leannevibert

Fishing For Ladies

New Wave Fishing Academy is an educational platform for the recreational fishing industry that allows everyone to learn how to catch fish; virtually.  Not catching fish on outings is a sure way to keep new anglers from coming back to the sport BUT most who go fishing have no idea where to start or how to find success without HOURS of trial and error on the water that nobody has. Before you ever get to the water you can learn how to turn fishing trips into catching trips with our online fishing educational resources.

Women In Angling History

When New Wave Fishing Academy was started it was based around the mission of helping everyone become more successful anglers and especially those who do not have the family, friends, or easily accessible opportunities to push them into the sport! From critics online challenging their skills as anglers, to talking down or belittling their accomplishments, there are a lot of unnecessary hurdles for women and young girls to get into fishing. These hurdles are not set up by those that represent the majority of the members in the industry but unfortunately they are often the loudest voice.

To combat this we started the "Women In Angling" blog series in 2022 to celebrate the women who love fishing, highlight female ambassadors and role models for the sport of fishing, and share their stories for those that just need a little push or someone to look towards to get into this sport we all love!
