Throwback Thursday: Flying Fish

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

At New Wave Fishing Academy we believe that practicing catch and release as much as possible is an anglers duty to the sport! It is a group effort to ensure the health of our fisheries can be maintained for future generations to enjoy as much as we have. To promote practicing catch and release we are going to share some of our favourite stories of fish we have caught & released for someone else to catch one day and create memories like the ones we are sharing with you all. If you have a story you want to share please reach out to us and we will gladly share.

This weeks Throwback Thursday story comes from New Wave Fishing Academy content creation team members Brandon & Collin who have a reputation for getting those high flying smallmouth into the boat that normally get away. In the sport of fishing its rare to give the catch of the day to someone without a rod but thats exactly what happened here.

"The Doc Rob annual bass tournament is a charity event that raises funds for mental health initiatives in our community. There are no cash prizes for this tournament and so each boat is allowed 4 anglers per boat. Despite this tournament not having any major winnings it has a ton of great anglers competing and over 30 boats. To win we were expecting to need close to 25 lbs.

After a morning putting tons of fish in the boat we found ourselves around 22 lbs with a 3.5 lber still in the livewell. As we get closer to weigh in time we hit one last spot and hook into a good one. The moment this fish hits it starts swimming towards the boat and the surface. I yell to Collin that its a good one and he grabs the net in preparation. I know its going to jump and when this happens they get off a lot of the time. As it makes its way towards the surface I call out the jump, it comes clean out of the water, and as it reaches the apex my bait comes flying back towards me. Expecting this to happen Collin reaches out and grabs the fish mid air. What A Catch. To top it off the fish weighs in at 4 lb 2 oz to cull out the smallest of our bag and push us over the limit. That fish moved us into 2nd place overall with a total of 23.75 lbs. From an already awesome day on the water that catch was the cherry on top; and the best part is those that don't believe it can watch it happen on our YouTube channel since we got it all on film!"
