While trolling is not our favorite fishing technique there is no denying that it puts fish in the boat! The main problem with trolling is that you don't know what your lure is doing or what depth it is actually at; until now!
At New Wave Fishing Academy we needed to be more effective while trolling and this meant understanding what our baits are doing. As anglers we all have too many lures and not enough time to learn how they behave under all conditions and aren't focusing on recording that behaviour so we can repeat it in the future. To solve this problem we utilized our background in engineering to do the math and develop the equations that govern how baits dive through the water column while trolling. The Trolling Depth IQ ebook also contains explanations for all of the factors impacting a lures dive depth, teaches you how to make a quick but accurate dive curve for your own bait on the fly, and includes modification factors for manipulating an existing dive curve you have under different conditions like switching to the jointed model of a bait, increasing or decreasing line size, or changing your speed.
Each bait in the Trolling Depth IQ Ebook (listed at the end of this article) will be complete with a sheet like the one below. The sheet shows the dive depth curves for the bait at 3, 4, & 5 MPH using 80 lb braided lines and for water temperatures of 60 F.
The online tool, link contained in ebook, allows you to select the bait of choice, input the speed, line rating, and water temperature to generate the dive curve instantly. This allows you to have a dive curve specific to your conditions or to experiment with in case you are considering buying certain baits for a depth situation, putting different line on a rod, or whatever else you can think of!
