"My name is Kayla Midgley and I am from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. My love for fishing started off with my mom when I was a very young child. My mom loved to fish growing up, and I have ADHD so when I was a kid it was very hard for my mom to keep me still or focused on something long enough to catch a break. So she taught me to fish when I was 4 and it was an instant calm for me. I was a very hyper child and she told me "fishing was the only thing I could get you to do that would shut your brain down and relax."

I started off with fishing for whatever would bite the hook until 7 years ago. I was going through a break up and wanted to check out some new scenery and try fishing in a place I have never fished before. I took a drive down to Queenston and met these hilarious old men that I just clicked with.I asked them what kind of fishing they were doing because I've never seen anything like it. They were bottom bouncing for rainbow trout. They taught me everything I know today about the style and my love grew from there. I still hang out with those old men, they are now my family.

My mom and I heard about musky fishing in St. Clair from sources online. So one halloween my mom and I decided to go on an adventure to check it out.  We both NEVER fished for musky before but just decided to have fun and give it a go. Unfortunately, it was a wash out but that's where we met Captain Mike (King Bowser's Sport Fishing), we were staying at the same hotel. He felt bad we went all that way so he asked if we wanted to go out on the boat with him. He took us out on his charter boat and taught us everything you need to know about musky. We are all now best friends and my mom and I go out with him every year!

As a female in the fishing world you come across rude comments and stereotypical bias but nothing that could ever stop me from going down to the water and having a relaxing time.

I urge all the young woman out there to chase their dreams of fishing and never give up. Don't listen to the sarcasm and stereotypes. You will make life long friends and create ever lasting memories. You never know how something is going to turn out until you go and do it. So go on that adventure,  go on that fishing trip. Everything I have accomplished has come from me being spontaneous and having no expectations."

We would like to thank Kayla for sharing her story & passion for fishing with us all. Her words highlight one of the underlying draws to fishing for all anglers; the potential of the unknown. You just never know what cast, what trip, or when your next PB will come & even more importantly what you could learn or memories you can make along the way! Fishing For Women

New Wave Fishing Academy is an educational platform for the recreational fishing industry that allows everyone to learn how to catch fish; virtually.  Not catching fish on outings is a sure way to keep new anglers from coming back to the sport BUT most who go fishing have no idea where to start or how to find success without HOURS of trial and error on the water that nobody has. Before you ever get to the water you can learn how to turn fishing trips into catching trips with our online fishing educational resources.

Women In Angling History

When New Wave Fishing Academy was started it was based around the mission of helping everyone become more successful anglers and especially those who do not have the family, friends, or easily accessible opportunities to push them into the sport! From critics online challenging their skills as anglers, to talking down or belittling their accomplishments, there are a lot of unnecessary hurdles for women and young girls to get into fishing. These hurdles are not set up by those that represent the majority of the members in the industry but unfortunately they are often the loudest voice.

To combat this we started the "Women In Angling" blog series in 2022 to celebrate the women who love fishing, highlight female ambassadors and role models for the sport of fishing, and share their stories for those that just need a little push or someone to look towards to get into this sport we all love!
