Women In Angling: Brittany Fournier

When New Wave Fishing Academy was started it was based around the mission of helping everyone become more successful anglers and especially those who do not have the family, friends, or easily accessible opportunities to push them into the sport. From our short time in operation trying to accomplish this mission there has been a very clear population that has a hard time breaking into the industry. From critics online challenging their skills as anglers to talking down or belittling their accomplishments there are a lot of unnecessary hurdles for women and young girls to get into fishing. While we know that these hurdles are not set up by those that represent the majority of the members in the industry they unfortunately are often the loudest voice. To combat this we started the "Women In Angling" blog series last year to highlight some of the best female ambassadors for the sport of fishing and share their stories for those that just need a little push or some role models to look towards to get into this sport we all love!

This weeks feature is Brittany Fournier! A resident of northern Ontario and avid outdoors woman Britt is a role model for female anglers. Her passion for the outdoors is obvious through her instagram posts and the fish she catches. Find out more about her story below:

"Hey everyone! My name is Brittany Fournier,

My love for all things outdoors and fishing started at a very young age. I am very fortunate, from the first moment I can remember my amazing father taught me all things fishing, boating, and being outdoors. He taught me how to be patient and love the sport. Sadly my dad passed away when I was 14 and I stopped fishing for a few years.

Thankfully my now fiancé and I met! He is an amazing angler and whose love for fishing and the outdoors was undoubtedly inspiring to me. He helped me realize why I love fishing so much again and has expanded my knowledge to more than just fishing from a boat. This fall he actually proposed to me on our boat while legend boats filmed us, it is a memory I’ll never forget!

I am a multi species angler from pike, salmon, rainbow, to lake trout, I fish them all! I typically fish the Manitoulin Island area. Spring, summer, fall, or winter you’ll find me on the water! My favourite fish to catch would have to be open water jigging with buzz bombs for lake trout on lake manitou. Most people are actually shocked to hear that I jig for lake trout in the summer! I simply just look for deep water structure that can hold fish. I’ll drop down to bottom with the buzzbomb and jig but also constantly working the water column for cruising lake trout as well! The weight of the buzz bomb is easy to get down deep and fast to target lake trout, once you get the trick of it you’ll never switch back!

Fishing holds a deep and profound significance: connecting people to nature, while offering moments of peace and reflection. The sport of fishing knows no gender boundaries but being a female angler in a male dominated community requires breaking stereotypes, embracing passion for the sport, and pushing through the discomfort that comes with it . Being a new female angler can definitely be scary but start by learning the basics; handling fishing gear and understanding safety measures. Following different groups or even reaching out to female anglers on Instagram with questions is a good way to do this (no question is a silly question)!  Gradually easing into the experience and focusing on the enjoyment of the sport and nature can make the process more enjoyable. Don't feel you need to rush to impress anyone. Reaching your goals takes time and fishing is no different.

If you ever have any questions feel free to send me a DM! Thanks for reading and remember In the world of fishing, every cast holds the promise of a new story, and as you reel in your experiences, may your memories be as vibrant as the waters you explore.

Tight lines and happy angling!"
