Women In Angling: Elisabeth Tyson

Updated: Dec 15, 2023

When New Wave Fishing Academy was started it was based around the mission of helping everyone become more successful anglers and especially those who do not have the family, friends, or easily accessible opportunities to push them into the sport. From our short time in operation trying to make accomplish this mission there has been a very clear population that has a hard time breaking into the industry. From critics online challenging their skills as anglers to talking down or belittling their accomplishments / questions there are a lot of unnecessary hurdles for women and young girls to get into the sport. While we know that these people setting up these hurdles do not represent the bulk of the members in the industry they unfortunately are often the loudest voice. To combat this we want to highlight some of the best ambassadors for "Women In Angling" that we know and share their stories for those that just need a little push to get into the sport or some role models to look towards!

This weeks feature is Elisabeth Tyson! A local Georgian Bay goer and pike catching enthusiast who we have been following for a couple years now. There is often a lot of pressure that anglers put on themselves to succeed when out on the water. We are always impressed at her ability to simply enjoy the sport and her time on Georgian Bay (our favorite place!) and convey this in her posts which helps remind us why we started fishing in the fish place and why we have stuck with it for so long. Without any further delay here is Elisabeth's story in her own words:

woman angler catching monster fish

My fondest memories are with my dad. Hooking into a fish, freaking out, just a young girl at the age of 5, having him help me reel it in, and posing proudly with it; amazed at what had just happened. Growing up in an outdoors family, fishing was sewn into my life. Even though I went years without doing it at times, it was always a love of mine and now one of my biggest passions.

Why?

Because there’s no other feeling that can relate to the feeling of catching a fish. I’m 30 years old and still, when i hook up, I’m freaking out (inside), posing proudly with my catch, amazed at what had just happened. Everyone, no matter your lifestyle, boy or girl, young or old, should try catching a fish at least once in their life and think about how it makes you feel. Excited, proud, happy are just some of the feelings you will experience catching a fish. No matter the size. There’s just something about knowing you could find bait, stick it on a string and a hook, throw it in the water and pull something out. You caught an incredible wild species out of a body of water and could provide food for you or your family. There is not much else like it.

Learning to fish is something that would truly add gratitude and peace in your life. It does for me, especially as a woman. Imagine this, you’ve had a hard week at work, you have the day off, the sun is shining, you grab your fishing rod and head to the river. You're catching fish, the day is beautiful, you're listening to the water run down the river, the birds chirping and not a car or soul is in sight. It’s dreamy right? And yet so easy to do. Everyone has to start somewhere!

Don’t be afraid of taking the first step. Fishing may have changed a lot over the years between technology, rods, reels and tackle, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fish if you don’t have that all the fancy things. Your basic 20 dollar rod and a hook with a worm still does the job! If you’re looking for a new hobby I highly recommend trying to fish.
